Chapter Eight

Jamie was whistling as he went downstairs the next morning. He’d locked Rory in the bedroom, ordering her to rest after they’d eaten and taken each other again. The woman was turning out to be as insatiable as he was. At least, he was when it came to her. He’d never wanted another woman the way he did her. Hell, even the thought of another woman filled him with disgust. Rory was his and would remain his until death took him from her. If he were lucky, it would be a long time in coming. He wanted years with her, wanted to fill her belly with their children and watch them grow with her.

“He’s up with his whore.”

Jamie’s head snapped up as the comment hit his ears, and a growl spilled from his throat. The area around him grew deathly quiet as he scanned the faces before him, searching out who had uttered the slur.

“What do you expect them to think,” Geoffrey said, and Jamie’s gaze snapped over to his friend. “They’ve seen nothing of the woman and only know she’s locked in your bedroom and screams your name loud enough to echo down those stairs during all hours of the day and night.”

“I’ll have the tongue of the next man or woman who speaks of her that way,” he snarled, raising his voice to make sure everyone heard him. “Shaun!”

When his second didn’t appear, he turned to the nearest man. “Find him and tell him I want him. Now.”

The man disappeared at a run, but Jamie’s mood stayed dark. He’d done this. He hadn’t cared when he’d first brought her to his castle. Then he’d been too wrapped up in her to even consider what was being said by his people. Her people now. He turned to another man.

“Go to the kitchens. Tell Cook I said we’ll be celebrating tonight. Tell him to prepare a feast fit for his king.”

He watched as the man took off, shouting at others to move out of his way. Then Jamie turned back to Geoffrey, noting Marcus stood beside him.

“I need you two to do something for me.”

“What do you need?” Marcus asked.

“A priest. There should be one in the village. I had him called here to oversee the burial of those lost during the attack. Fetch him and bring him to the castle.”

“Why?” Geoffrey asked. “Is there a body here he needs to bless?”

“He’ll be marrying me before sundown.”

Geoffrey stared at him then nodded. “Does the lucky bride know?”

“She knows she belongs to me. She’ll be ready to say the vows when he gets here.”

Marcus cleared his throat. “What about clothes? Or is the priest going to be sent to your bedroom to marry you while the bride wears only a fur from the marriage bed?”

“Her clothes should be here today. When I first arrived, I sent one of my men with a list of what I wanted. She’ll wear clothes from her husband and no one else.”

“Possessive, isn’t he?” Marcus quipped, but Geoffrey didn’t smile.
